As I look to union leaders like Mary Kay Henry, or James Hoffa, Jr., or Bob King, or Roger Robinson, or Kevin Moore, or people like Richard Trumka, I really do believe that a new paradigm in organized labor is being defined even as I type these words.

How is it ladies and gentlemen, how is it that just over 7 months into a new Michigan legislative body that we have been able to ignite so much passion and so much purpose by so many people? The answer is really quite simple, it is because there are more of us than there are of them and we have finally had enough.

Think about any other business that would be stressed, torn, and tattered, for so long and so strenuously as has organized labor over the last 5 years. How have they responded? Brilliantly! Eloquently! Compassionately! Bravely!

Christos “Chris” Michalakis-UFCW

Christos “Chris” Michalakis is the Secretary-Treasurer of the Metro Detroit AFL-CIO as well as the Legislative and Political Director for the United Food and Commercial Workers of Michigan. Chris was appointed Secretary-Treasurer this year, and has been with the United Food and Commercial Workers since 2004.

Chris is also an executive board member of Progress Michigan, is serving his second year on the Advisory Board for the Michigan Summit, and represents the UFCW at the America Votes coalition table. An immigrant by way of Canada and Greece, Chris has also been very active in advocating for immigrant’s rights with the organization Alliance for Immigrants Rights, and the previous group “Reform Immigration for America.” Committed to fighting for social justice, he serves on the Restaurant Opportunity Center Michigan Advisory Board as well as the Food Justice Task Force of the D4 (Doing Development Differently in Detroit) collaborative.

Chris graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Communications. He currently is also a part time graduate student at Wayne State where he is perusing a Master of Arts in Employment and Labor Relations.

Chris is a member of the NAACP, the Trade Union Leadership Council (TULC), American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), Pride at Work (PAW), the United Latinos of the UFCW, the UFCW Minority Coalition, and member of Nativity of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Plymouth, MI.
